Abseiling

The Yarra Valley Region Abseiling Team

The Yarra Valley Region Abseiling Team (YVRAT) is a satellite team of the Victorian Branch Abseiling Council (VBAC). The team has grown from its beginings as the First Emerald Abseiling Team (FEAT) into a team that serves the Yarra Valley Scout Region. Members from the Scout community from anywhere are welcome. We also work with VBAC and other teams on jobs in other areas.

The team operates the Wilson and Nunn Tower (formerly The Bell Tower) situated at 1st Emerald Scout Group Hall 21 Kilvington Drive, Emerald. Melway 127 E5. Generally Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and some weekends are available.

We can operate the Gilwell Park tower by pre-arrangement with Gilwell Park. Note when using Gilwell's tower there is an additional fee payable direct to Gilwell.

At this time we regret that we do not operate the Clifford Park tower (but we're working on it!).

From 2010 onwards we plan to operate bi-annual sessions at Four Brothers Rocks in Bunyip State Park. We are currently negotiating with Parks Victoria. Stay tuned for more information.

f you're interested in becoming a part of this challenging and interesting activity base please let us know.

Four Brothers is on! PDF Print E-mail

We're finally there, we have reached the end of our long and hard road with Parks Victoria and we have the event permit for our abseiling activities on Four Brothers Rocks in Bunyip State Park. An 11th hour effort has produced the permit in time for this weekend's activity with youth from Sherbrooke Forest District.

This is great news. We're also covered for our events later in the year in October and next year in April.

This means we can now confidently take bookings for the next available activity on Oct 9/10 (9th is main day, 10th is weather contingency).

Thanks to Gembrook Parks Victoria office staff for helping us to get this through.

New abseiling gear has arrived PDF Print E-mail

The new abseiling gear has now arrived. Thanks to the contributions from the groups that work with our team over the last year we've purchased fifteen new kits (harness, caribiner, and figure 8 descender) along with some new rescue equipment and a pile of new steel caribiners and slings to replace the ageing ones.

This latest purchase of five harness kits means that we can now handle the largest groups without having to swap harnesses part way through the session. This will allow the students to continue abseiling for the entire time of their booking.

The next major expense will be the registration of our leaders that only work for our team.

Thanks to the support of groups who use the tower, we've been able to place an order for five new sets of gear. This purchase has come entirely out of funds earnt through the team. It is the first time the YVRAT team has been able to purchase equipment from its own money without borrowing from the group or seeking a grant and bodes very well for the future as a financially self sufficient entity.

We would like to thank Sharon of Fire & Safety Solutions of Don River for their support of Scouting in providing a great price on the harnesses and going out of their way to be helpful.

We would also like to thank Steve Morris of Rock Hardware in Bendigo for his great prices and extra special service.

The team prefers to buy from family businesses and is please to support fellow semi-rural and rural Victorian organisations.
